HYDERABAD: An electricity theft case has been registered against Riaz Chandio, chairman of Jeay Sindh Mahaz, and several others following action by the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO).
According to a HESCO spokesperson, the case was registered as part of an anti-power theft operation. Police said an FIR was lodged at Qasimabad Police Station on the complaint of HESCO Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Aftab Ahmed.
The complaint states that during an inspection, officials discovered illegal wires allegedly being used to draw electricity directly from a HESCO supply line through an unauthorized connection. HESCO officials said evidence of unlawful electricity consumption was found during the inquiry, prompting legal action against the accused.
Police have initiated an investigation under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code and the Electricity Act 2016.
Responding to the allegations, Riaz Chandio denied any wrongdoing and claimed the case was politically motivated. He said the state had become alarmed by his efforts to raise his voice for the rights of Sindh.
Chandio further stated that a solar power system is installed at his residence and that an application for an electricity meter has already been submitted, rejecting the allegations of electricity theft.
