KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday foiled a human smuggling bid at Karachi airport, detaining four passengers who were trying to travel to Poland via Azerbaijan illegally.

The key role of an Indian agent in smuggling Pakistani citizens to Europe and other countries via Azerbaijan has also come to light.

According to the FIA spokesperson, four passengers, including Haseeb Ahmed, Qaiser Ahmed, Usman Ali, and agent Abdul Shakoor, have been taken into custody in an immigration operation.

The suspects belong to Faisalabad, Chiniot, Gujranwala, and Nankana Sahib. The passengers revealed that the agent Shakoor made agreements of Rs 1.4 million each for sending them to Poland.

The suspects paid Rs 250,000 each in advance to the agent. Under the plan, they were to travel illegally from Azerbaijan to Poland. Important evidence was recovered from the mobile phone of Shakoor.

The FIA spokespersons said that human smuggler Abdul Shakoor had links to an Indian agent, Gautam Sharma, who was supposed to send the suspects from Azerbaijan to Poland illegally.

The arrested men have been transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking Circle Karachi for further investigations.
