ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has restrained Bahria Town Electric (BTE) from allegedly overcharging residents, in a ruling seen as a significant relief for consumers.
During a hearing on January 21, the court reviewed a response submitted by Bahria Town Electric but found it unsatisfactory. Following this, the court issued clear directions aimed at protecting residents from what petitioners described as unjustified and excessive electricity charges.
The court’s order underscored that imposing additional or unexplained charges in the name of electricity is not acceptable and must comply with the law and applicable regulations.
Legal representatives for the residents argued that consumers’ rights are protected under constitutional and legal provisions, and that private utility operators cannot levy arbitrary fees. The court’s decision was viewed as a validation of the residents’ collective legal efforts to challenge the billing practices.
The case highlights growing scrutiny over billing mechanisms used by private electricity suppliers in housing societies and reinforces the principle that consumer rights must be safeguarded under the law.
