Islamabad to be divided into three town corporations
ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to abolish the existing metropolitan corporation system in Islamabad and divide the city into three town corporations.
Under the new system, Islamabad will have 3 mayors and 6 deputy mayors.
The term of the mayor and deputy mayors will be 4 years, and the chairman of the union councils will elect them.
The presidential ordinance will be sent to the President. After signing it, the Election Commission will issue a new delimitation and election schedule under the amendments.
It has been decided to divide Islamabad into three town corporations. According to sources, it has been proposed to divide the capital into three towns on the basis of the three constituencies of the National Assembly.
Under the new local government system, it is proposed to give administrative and financial autonomy to the town corporations, while several powers of the CDA will be transferred to the town corporations in phases.
Sources say that mayors are likely to be given important powers related to sanitation, drainage, and development projects.
According to sources, a presidential ordinance is expected soon after the approval of the federal cabinet, after which the Election Commission will issue new delimitations and an election schedule under the amendments.
Sources say that the proposed system is expected to improve governance and provision of civic amenities at the local level.
