KARACHI: The Karachi traffic police have decided to take an important step toward enhancing road safety by installing front and rear cameras on all dumpers and trucks.

The action came into being after a meeting with the Goods Carrier Association aimed at improving traffic law enforcement and understanding the reasons behind accidents involving these vehicles.

According to DIG Traffic, these cameras will significantly help in driver monitoring and investigation of incidents. He put forth that huge numbers of dumpers and trucks ply the roads in Karachi, and in the past, many investigations have not taken off due to the unavailability of evidence.

The cameras are expected to help in understanding the prevention of accidents in the city.

To make this project work well, the DIG said that the recordings should be preserved for at least 15 days, with the live and recorded camera videos, tracking information for surveillance, being accessible to the Karachi Traffic Police.

The Goods Carrier Association has promised to partner positively with the Traffic Police to make the program a success.

The DIG Traffic said strict enforcement will take place, and urged vehicle owners to install the cameras within the given time frame to decrease accidents and improve public safety. This move, he believes, would bring a significant improvement in road safety in Karachi and control accidents by dumpers and trucks.
