KARACHI: As citizens of Karachi endure yet another heatwave, relief may be on the way with monsoon rains expected to start from today which cited a private meteorological service.

The Met Office has indicated that Karachi is likely to see heavy to moderate rainfall as a robust system of monsoon winds approaches Sindh tonight. The showers could be accompanied by lightning and thunder.

A private meteorological service has reported that a low-pressure system from central India is moving towards Gujarat, which is expected to bring rain to Sindh’s Tharparkar, Umarkot, Mithi, and other areas tonight (Sunday). In Karachi, steady rain is forecast from today evening through Tuesday evening, with the city potentially receiving 30-50 millimeters of rain, or even up to 10 millimeters in isolated heavy to moderate showers, possibly continuing until Thursday (August 1).

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has instructed all relevant departments to take precautions against potential flooding and extreme weather, as monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea impact the upper parts of the country.

The NDMA warned that the rainfall could trigger landslides, mudslides, or falling boulders, disrupting roads in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

In Sindh and Balochistan, isolated heavy showers are expected from July 29 to July 31. In response to the anticipated monsoon rains, the Sindh government has extended summer vacations for all public and private schools until August 14.
