KARACHI: A massive fire broke out at a garment factory in the Export Processing Zone Landhi in Karachi, leaving seven people injured, as rescue efforts are underway.

Rescue 1122 official said that the fire, which started from the basement of the 5-story building, has quickly spread to the upper floors of the five-storey building and to the adjacent cement factory.

The rescue spokesperson said that the fire has been declared a third-degree fire, and over ten fire tenders from various departments are currently engaged in dousing the flames. Workers were safely evacuated with the help of a construction pole used as an emergency escape route.

According to Edhi sources, seven people have been injured as a result of the roof and wall collapsing due to the fire and were shifted to a nearby hospital.

During the rescue operation, a factory employee faced respiratory problems and was provided with first aid.

Later, Chairman Export Processing Zone AD Khawaja reached the fire-affected factory.

Talking to the media, he said that the fire was reported around 10:30 am. Initially, our EPZ fire tenders had reached; however, considering the severity of the fire, more fire tenders were called.

He said that he has spoken to the Commissioner Karachi and the head of Rescue 1122. “They are trying to control the fire soon and save the adjacent factory from burning,” he said.
