NDMA releases statistics of deaths caused by ongoing monsoon rains

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday released the statistics of casualties resulting from the raging monsoon rains sweeping through Pakistan, stating that a minimum of 13 individuals had died in the last 24 hours.

A total of 13 people have also suffered injuries in some rain-related incidents throughout the period, according to the NDMA. There were seven fatalities in Punjab, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where three individuals were killed in the heavy rains and floods.

Islamabad witnessed two fatalities in different rain-related incidents, and one lost their life in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The NDMA had warned of further heavy rain, calling on residents to remain cautious and keep away from exposed areas as the monsoon season becomes more intense.

The NDMA on Tuesday reported that 221 people have lost their lives and over 500 others have been hurt in accidents related to almost a month of heavy monsoon rains in the nation.

From June 26 to July 21, 221 individuals have died, 104 of them children and 40 women,” a representative of the national disaster management agency said in an interview with AFP.

Five additional individuals have died over the last 24 hours due to the recent monsoon rains across the nation.

The NDMA, in its revised report, added the two men and three children among the dead. Ten were injured in rain-related incidents.

According to the report, over 804 houses have been destroyed by the heavy rains. Punjab is the most affected province, in which 135 have lost their lives and 470 were injured, 168 partially damaged houses and 24 destroyed houses, NDMA added.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 40 people lost their lives and 69 were injured. Moreover, 142 houses were partially damaged and 78 completely collapsed in the rain calamity.

In Sindh, 22 people have died and 40 have been injured in the rainfall. While at least 54 houses were partially damaged, and 33 were thoroughly destroyed, the disaster agency said.

At least 16 individuals lost their lives in Baluchistan, and four individuals were injured due to rain-related accidents. The rains flattened eight houses while 56 were partially damaged, as per the NDMA.

Three individuals got injured due to recent rains in Gilgit-Baltistan, while 71 houses were partially damaged and 66 houses were flattened.

One person was killed and 6 were injured in the rains in Azad Kashmir. Additionally, 75 houses were partially destroyed, and 17 houses were destroyed.

A minimum of one person lost their life in Islamabad, and 35 houses were partially destroyed, and 1 house was destroyed.
