PESHAWAR: A total of 4.92 million boys and girls, which makes 37% of the children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), are not enrolled in school, according to a newly released document from the provincial education department.

Most children out of school are from Kolai-Palas Kohistan, where over 80,000 boys and girls are not getting basic education, with Lower and Upper Kohistan, with 79% of children not enrolled in any educational institution.

However, Upper Chitral has topped the list with only 10% of children out of educational institutions.

Nearly half a million children in Peshawar are not enrolled in any school, with more than half of them being girls, indicating a major gender gap in accessibility to education.

KP Education Minister Faisal Tarakai noted the severity of the crisis, adding that the government is currently working hard to get children back in the school.

According to Tarakai, “1.3 million children were enrolled in schools last year,” with a goal of enrolling one million more this year. He restated the government’s resolve to increase access and resolve inequalities in provincial school enrollment.
