KARACHI: A newlywed bride who had slipped into a coma after allegedly being brutally assaulted by her husband in Karachi’s Lyari area passed away on Wednesday.
According to reports, the victim, Shanti, was under treatment at the Trauma Centre of Civil Hospital after suffering severe injuries in the Shah Baig Lane area of Lyari.
The woman was in a coma, and her physical examination results were “consistent with sexual violence”, police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed added.
“Ms Shanti, 19, rape victim, succumbed to her injuries at the Trauma Centre of the Civil Hospital Karachi at 10:45 am today,” Syed added.
Police confirmed that she had been in critical condition after the violent attack.
The police said further that Shanti had married Ashok on June 15, and the act of violence occurred just two days later on June 17. The accused allegedly mutilated various parts of her body and left her in a life-threatening condition.
Baghdadi police arrested the accused Ashok, and a case was filed against him on the victim’s brother’s complaint. The accused was sent to jail by the court later.
