BRICS denounces Iran assault without naming US-Israel; Trump responds with 10% tariff warning

17th BRICS summit

RIO DE JANEIRO: The BRICS group of alternative world powers has strongly condemned the attacks on Iran, calling them a clear violation of international law.

However, the organization refrained from directly naming the United States and Israel.

The 17th BRICS summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, began a two-day session in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The statement said that the attacks on Iranian civilian and nuclear facilities after June 13 are a serious violation of international law. The BRICS demanded that Iran’s sovereignty be respected and such attacks stopped.

In addition, the BRICS also called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

The meeting said that increasing tariffs on global trade could prove dangerous for the global economy. The meeting also supported the accession of Iran and Ethiopia to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Notably, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates have now joined the BRICS, making this alliance even stronger and more effective.

President Trump

US President Donald Trump has openly threatened the BRICS organization, saying that any country that becomes part of the anti-American policy of the BRICS will be subject to an additional 10 percent tariff.

This statement comes at a time when the BRICS has condemned the attacks of the US and Israel on Iran, although the organization did not directly name the two countries.

President Trump said that “no one will be exempt from this policy, and letters related to tariffs have been sent to various countries today.”
