Pakistan weather update: NDMA forecasts widespread heatwave across country for next 6 days

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Thursday said that cloudy weather, scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely to occur in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Potohar region and upper Punjab between Friday and Wednesday (June 13-16).

An impact-based weather advisory issued by the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) of the NDMA has urged the public to take precautionary measures and stay updated through the NDMA app, as extreme heat is likely to prevail in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, some areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) from Friday (June 13) to Wednesday.

A weak western weather system is forecast to affect the upper parts of the country from June 13 to 16, which may affect weather conditions in several provinces.

Hot weather is likely to persist in Punjab throughout the week.

Mostly hot conditions are predicted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), however, rain with strong winds and thundershowers is likely in several districts including Chitral, Dir, Haripur, Karak, Kohat, Kohistan, Khyber, Kurram, Mansehra, Mohmand, Nowshera, Malakand, Charsadda, Abbottabad, Swat, Bannu, Bannu, Swat, Chitral, Waziristan and adjoining areas.

Sindh and Balochistan are predicted to remain mostly hot and dry during the advisory period.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will experience hot weather, however, isolated rain is possible in areas like Astore, Skardu, Hunza, Shaghar, Bagh and Neelum Valley from June 13 to 16.

NDMA, through NEOC, is closely monitoring the situation and is maintaining coordination with provincial and district authorities to ensure timely preparedness and response.

The public, especially those living in heat-prone areas, are advised to take necessary precautions during extreme temperatures. These include staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours (11:00 AM to 4:00 PM), wearing light and breathable clothing, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. It is also very important to never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
