PDMA releases monsoon alert fact sheet

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released a Monsoon Alert Fact Sheet, stating the status of monsoon rain, and river, barrage, and dam water levels of Punjab.

Information on the extent of the damage from monsoon rains is also provided in the fact sheet. The information is that, within the past 24 hours, rain was observed in various locations such as Murree, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Attock, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Chakwal, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

PDMA Director General (DG) Irfan Ali Kathia, presenting information from the report, announced that 18 people died as a result of monsoon rain and 57 others were injured. Additionally, 27 homes were also damaged.

11 children, three women, and seven men were among the deceased. The majority of the fatalities occurred as a result of the collapse of mud houses, old buildings, and rooftops.

The report further indicated that two citizens lost their lives because of lightning in Khanewal and Okara, while two children lost their lives because of electrocution in Mandi Bahauddin.

The PDMA DG added that, according to government orders, financial support will be given to the grieving families.

In the future, the PDMA added that the first spell of monsoon rains will persist until July 1 (Tuesday).

At the same time, the water level in all rivers and barrages of Punjab continues at a normal rate. Nonetheless, PDMA arrangements have also been finalized in consideration of the potential flood risk.

There could be a threat of urban flooding in Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, DG Kathia stated. The administration of major cities remains on high alert in consideration of the emergency, he said.

PDMA Control Room and District Emergency Operation Centers

are keeping a 24/7 watch. On account of potential rains, orders have been issued to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the administration to clear water from low-lying areas.

The Punjab government has banned bathing in rivers, canals, and rain drains in totality. Strict action will be taken in case of breach. PDMA DG also stated that the citizens need to avoid unnecessary movement during bad weather, and should not approach electric wires and poles.
