ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited Opposition Leader Omar Ayub for a meeting to consult on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and two members, according to media reports.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a letter to Opposition Leader Omar Ayub that the term of the Chief Election Commissioner and two members has expired on January 26, and under Article 218, proposals for the Chief Election Commissioner and members should be sent to the parliamentary committee.
The letter said that I invite you to a meeting to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and two members.
Opposition Leader Omar Ayub confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent a letter on May 16 for consultation on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, and the PTI is ready for consultation on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and two members.
Earlier, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub had written a letter to Speaker Ayaz Sadiq for the formation of a parliamentary committee, which the Speaker sent to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Now, after receiving the opinion of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the Speaker will take the final decision on the formation of the committee.
The five-year term of the Chief Election Commissioner and two members ended on January 26. Despite the completion of the term, they are performing their duties. Under Article 215 of the Constitution, the current Chief Election Commissioner will continue to perform his current duties until a new Chief Election Commissioner is appointed.
