ISLAMABAD: In a recent development, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has penned down a heartfelt letter of appreciation to Sardar Awais Leghari, Minister for Power, for his exceptional leadership in navigating the government’s reform agenda in the power sector through turbulent times.
In the letter, PM Shehbaz praised notable achievements of Awais Leghari, including the substantial reduction of Rs. 780 billion in circular debt, bringing the total down to Rs. 1,614 billion. This feat was made possible through persistent effort and effective collaboration across institutions.
The successful renegotiation of Power Purchase Agreements with over 35 Independent Power Producers (IPPs), including the termination of six contracts, marks a significant milestone.
This effort is expected to result in savings of approximately Rs. 3.6 trillion for the national exchequer, providing much-needed relief to the economy.
Furthermore, the overall tariff reduction of Rs. 8.35 per unit compared to the previous year has delivered tangible relief to power consumers, easing the burden on households and invigorating industrial demand.
The introduction of initiatives like ‘Apna Meter, Apni Reading’ showcases a modern approach to governance, prioritizing transparency and public engagement.
These commendable strides in power sector reforms are expected to have a lasting impact on Pakistan’s energy security and economic resilience. The minister’s leadership and team have been commended for their efforts, and it is hoped that their continued endeavors will further strengthen the country’s power sector.
