The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) took a decisive step on Saturday by expelling its veteran leader, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, citing continuous violations of party discipline. The party also revoked Abbasi’s basic membership.

PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal stated that the disciplinary action was initiated due to Mehtab Abbasi’s persistent violation of party rules and regulations. He emphasized that the decision was made under the instructions of the party president, Shehbaz Sharif.

This move followed Mehtab Abbasi’s declaration of support for an independent candidate, Ali Khan Jadoon, backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the NA-17 constituency of Abbottabad. In response, the PML-N terminated Abbasi’s party membership and expelled him from the party.

Simultaneously, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi announced his intention to contest the upcoming election as an independent candidate in the NA-16 constituency.

Mehtab Abbasi, a former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governor, had severed ties with the PML-N in December of the previous year. At that time, he expressed concerns about the provincial leadership and criticized the party’s internal dynamics. Abbasi highlighted differences with Nawaz Sharif on principles but clarified that he had no issues with Maryam Nawaz.

In his departure from the PML-N, Abbasi emphasized the need for democracy within political parties and criticized what he perceived as a lack of democratic values within the PML-N. He also expressed skepticism about the leadership’s ability to address the economic challenges facing the country.

This recent expulsion of Sardar Mehtab Abbasi underscores the internal dynamics within the PML-N and adds a new dimension to the political landscape in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.
