KARACHI: According to media reports, the voting on the vacant general seat of the Senate is underway at the Sindh Assembly hall today. The seat was vacant after the demise of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) ‘s veteran Senator Taj Haider.
The voting was started at 09 am in the morning and will be closed at 04 pm in the evening without any breaks.
PPP has given the ticket to Waqar Mehdi, while MQM Pakistan fielded Nighat Mirza as its candidate to contest the election and PTI has boycotted the election.
With 116 members, the People’s Party, Sindh’s ruling party, holds a majority in the province assembly; the MQM-P has 36 members.
Independent lawmakers supported by the PTI have declared their intention to boycott the poll.
Shabbir Ali Qureshi, the PTI’s legislative leader in the assembly, has said that none of his party’s MPs will participate in the vote.
The Sindh Election Commission had already declared that all polling-related preparations were finished.
