KARACHI: Even before the onset of an intense heatwave, the country is facing a worsening power crisis, with prolonged and unannounced load shedding reported in multiple cities, causing severe inconvenience to citizens and triggering a growing water shortage.

According to sources, the electricity shortfall has exceeded 3,500 megawatts, resulting in load shedding of 6 to 8 hours in urban areas and 12 to 14 hours in rural regions.

The situation is particularly difficult in Punjab, including Lahore, where the Lahore Electric Supply Company is reportedly facing a shortfall of over 1,000 megawatts.

Unannounced outages have also intensified in Multan, Jhang, and Peshawar. In Multan, electricity supply remains suspended for 8 to 10 hours in urban areas, while rural areas are experiencing outages of up to 14 hours. Similar conditions are being reported in parts of Peshawar.

The prolonged power cuts have disrupted business activities and daily life, with residents facing significant hardship even during nighttime. The power outages have also affected water supply systems in several areas.

Sources in the National Transmission and Despatch Company said electricity generation is being hampered due to shortages of RLNG, water, and furnace oil. The current spell of unannounced load shedding is expected to continue for the next few days, further aggravating the situation.
