LAHORE: The power crisis in Lahore has intensified once again.
The power shortfall in the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) system has increased to more than 850 MW. At present, the demand for electricity in the city is about 2700 MW, but the supply is not meeting it. This situation has increased the problems of the citizens.
According to sources, the main reason for this crisis is the sudden shutdown of the Balloki Power Plant. This power plant has been shut down due to non-availability of RLNG gas. It should be remembered that the Balloki plant was supplying about 1223 MW of electricity to the national grid. Its shutdown has put severe pressure on the power system.
Due to power shortage, unannounced load shedding is continuing in the city. Power is being cut off for an average of 2 hours in urban areas, while for 4 to 6 hours in suburban and rural areas. As the heat increases, the demand for electricity will increase and the duration of load shedding may increase further.
On the other hand, the gas crisis is also intensifying. According to Sui Northern, due to the decrease in gas pressure and shortage, citizens are forced to use LPG as an alternative. This is increasing household expenses, especially the poor and middle class are being affected the most.
