MULTAN: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Ali Qasim Gilani won the by-elections in NA-148, Multan-I defeating the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate on Sunday.
According to unofficial results, Ali Qasim Gilani, son of Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, got 83,250 votes while his opponent, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate Taimur Malik Mahay managed to secure 51,572 votes.
Twelve candidates belonging to various political parties took part in polls to win the seat vacated following the resignation of Senator Yousuf Raza Gilani who took oath as the Senate Chairman.

With 69 polling stations declared sensitive in the constituency, polling started at 8:00 am and continued till 5:00 pm without any interval.
The by-elections were held in the constituency after Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani vacated the seat on assuming the office of Chairman Senate.
