ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has outlined a plan to block Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) in three phases. The process will begin on August 16, following data received from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

Three phases of blocking SIMs:

1.In the first phase, SIMs registered under fake or canceled CNICs will be blocked

2. The second phase will target SIMs linked to expired CNICs.

3. The third phase will address SIMs registered under CNICs of deceased individuals.

Subscribers have begun receiving notifications about this upcoming action.

In a related development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued an injunction preventing the federal government from blocking SIMs of non-filers.

IHC Chief Justice Aamir Farooq issued the order in response to a written petition filed by a telecom operator challenging Clause 114-B of the Income Tax Ordinance and the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Income Tax General Orders.

The petition argued that the tax regulator’s actions infringed on the fundamental right to freedom.
