LAHORE: The Punjab government has extended Section 144 enforcement throughout the entire province for seven additional days because of terrorist threats and public safety requirements, according to the Home Department notification.
The new order prohibits public gatherings, which include rallies, protests, and demonstrations, until all people need to obtain official permission for their assembly. The restrictions will remain in force until March 14. Officials reported that security assessments, together with intelligence findings, showed threats against sensitive events which became potential targets for both terrorist attacks and sectarian violence.
Authorities believe the preventive measure will help law enforcement agencies maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents. The notification established that law enforcement personnel who conduct official duties during the restrictions will remain exempt from all bans.
The restrictions do not apply to wedding ceremonies or funerals, or burial gatherings, which will occur during the restricted period. Government and semi-government offices will proceed with their standard operations, while court proceedings will continue without interruption.
The order strictly forbids all types of weapon display and carrying in public spaces throughout the entire enforcement duration. The authorities will take legal action against anyone who violates the restrictions according to applicable laws.
Provincial governments in Pakistan use Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to establish prohibitions during times of increased security threats, political demonstrations, and religious events to maintain order and prevent unrest.
