LAHORE: The Punjab Government has established the Punjab Price Control and Commodities Management Department (PCCMD), effectively replacing the Food Department, here on Tuesday.

As per the details, this initiative brings together different agencies from different departments under one authority to improve food security and commodity management across the province.

The government has appointed Muhammad Ajmal Bhatti as the secretary of the newly created department. The PCCMD has administrative control over the Punjab Food Authority and the Agriculture Marketing Regulatory Authority, which were previously administered by the Food and Industries Department.

The change follows amendments to the Rules of Business 2011, and the department is tasked with legislation, policy development, and planning to ensure food safety. It will regulate food safety, hygiene and business practices, as well as oversee the procurement, storage and distribution of wheat.

Additionally, the PCCMD will handle regulation of flour and sugar mills, registration of contractors, and price monitoring of essential commodities. It will work for consumer protection through Consumer Protection Councils and monitor inter-provincial trade.

An important responsibility of the department is to maintain a comprehensive database to track the supply and demand of essential commodities taking into account factors such as seasonal changes and market conditions. The department will also develop a supply chain management system and conduct economic studies to support policy making.
