LAJORE: The Punjab Government has decided to make a fitness certificate mandatory for motor bikes to tackle the issue of Air pollution in the province.
The Government is likely to amend the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965. The amendment will be presented in the provisional assembly under the title of Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2025.
The amendment has been sent to the relevant committee, which will provide the report within two months.
The proposed change in the act includes the word “motorcycle” alongside “vehicle” in Clause 38-A of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, which will make it necessary for the motorbike owner to take a fitness certificate. Currently, the fitness certificate is mandatory only for vehicles.
The certificate validity is only for one year. Moreover, the motorcycles make up 85% of transport in the province.
The purpose is to improve traffic safety and minimize hazardous emissions, which contribute significantly to pollution during the winter season.
Authorities hope the measure will also boost efforts to enhance the province’s air quality, as part of a larger push against climate change and environmental damage.
