LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved a 90-day special remission in the sentences of prisoners across the province on the occasion of Eid ul Adha.
The notification was issued by the Punjab Home Secretary on Wednesday following the directive of the Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz.
The Punjab Home Department said that around 450 inmates held in jails will benefit from the concession, while 270 prisoners are expected to be released, allowing them to celebrate Eid with their families.
The sentence reduction has been granted under Rule 216 of the Pakistan Prisons Rules, 1978. However, the relief will not apply to individuals convicted of serious and high-profile crimes.
The crimes excluded from the concession include terrorism, sectarianism, rebellion, or anti-state activities are excluded from this concession.
In addition, those serving sentences for espionage, murder, rape, drug trafficking, armed robbery, kidnapping, embezzlement, or causing financial loss to the national exchequer are also ineligible.
The home department noted that steps have been taken to support the welfare of inmates and to allow deserving prisoners to reunite with their families during Eid, promoting a sense of rehabilitation and compassion.
