Saturday’s Senate session finally begins after delays, amid efforts for consensus on ‘Constitutional Amendments’

ISLAMABAD – After multiple delays, the Senate session began at 11 p.m. on Saturday, with the federal government working to finalize its constitutional amendments, which include judicial reforms and the extension of the chief justice’s term. The session saw various postponements throughout the day, as did the National Assembly session, which has not yet begun.

Despite claims of having sufficient numbers to pass the 26th amendment, the government, led by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, emphasized the importance of building a broad consensus, particularly with the opposition parties, to avoid political friction.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari confirmed that his party and the JUI-F were aligned on the proposed amendments, though opposition remains from other quarters. BNP-M Chief Akhtar Mengal has stated that his party will not support the bill unless certain demands, including the release of allegedly abducted lawmakers’ sons, are met.

The PTI has accused the government of pressuring lawmakers to vote in favor of the bill, while maintaining that final decisions will be made after consulting with party leader Imran Khan. The government hopes to conclude consultations by the end of the day, but opposition concerns over coercion and transparency remain.
