ISLAMABAD: A dramatic turn of events unfolded during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on IT & Telecom as officials from the Ministry of IT and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) failed to identify the owner of Sun TV, despite the channel being involved in ongoing spectrum litigation.
The Committee Chairman, visibly frustrated, repeatedly asked who owned Sun TV, but government representatives, including the legal member, claimed ignorance. He rebuked the officials and directed them to report back with the name.
Ironically, it was not the ministry, but a journalist present at the meeting who broke the silence, revealing that the owner of Sun TV is renowned businessman Aqeel Karim Dhedhi.
Senator Afnanullah expressed disappointment, stating, “Everyone in the media knows this, but government officials are afraid to name Aqeel Karim Dhedhi.”
Senator Humayun Mehmud later suggested the committee summon Dhedhi to its next session for clarification.
The case highlights growing concerns over transparency and the apparent reluctance of state institutions to name powerful individuals.
