KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced to investigate the Gul Plaza tragedy through a judicial commission.
While holding a press conference in Karachi, Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon said that the government is writing a letter to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court for a judicial investigation.
The letter will request that the tragedy be investigated by a serving judge. He will not come under pressure from any political party. Payment of relief checks to the martyrs of Gul Plaza has started.
The decision of the judicial commission was not made under pressure from any political party. We are accountable to the people, not to any political party.
He said that some political parties are doing politics on the tragedy. We are not doing politics on such incidents, but some parties are.
The Sindh government is not under any pressure. We are doing what we have to do. When we felt it, we wrote for a judicial inquiry.
The senior Sindh minister said that after the Gul Plaza incident, the Sindh cabinet formed a committee. The committee was to decide on the report of the committee formed under the chairmanship of the Commissioner Karachi.
The report of the committee formed by the Commissioner Karachi has come. It is a very detailed report and contains interviews of all the people.
Sharjeel Memon said that when the incident happened, there were 2,500 to 2,000 people in the building. Gul Plaza had been safety audited twice, but it was not implemented.
The Civil Defense Department has visited Gul Plaza several times since 2023 and issued two notices. 80 precious lives were lost in the tragedy.
