KARACHI: The Sindh Home Department has banned the travel and speeches of 143 Ulema and Zakireen over security concerns across 13 districts in Sindh during the month of Muharram.

Sindh Home Department missed notification in this regard, announcing that the ban will be effective immediately and will last for 60 days.

According to a notification, Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon had recommended the restrictions on these 143 scholars and zakireen. The provincial govt said that the ban has been imposed “viewing the law and order situation” expected during the sacred Islamic month.

To further enhance security measures, the provincial governments have also sought the temporary suspension of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, from Muharram 6 to 11.

Earlier, the federal interior ministry turned down the request of the Punjab government regarding the suspension of social media applications during 6-days of Muharram in Punjab to curb the spread of hate material and misinformation on the internet.

The Sindh government has also banned pillion riding to uphold law and order across the province. The prohibition will take effect for Ashura on Muharram 9 and 10.

However, women, children under the age of twelve, older citizens, people with disabilities, journalists, uniformed members of law enforcement and private security services, and staff members of critical services are exempt from the restriction.

Furthermore, until Ashura, the government has prohibited the carrying and exhibition of weapons, as well as the holding of processions and majlis in the province without a permit, in accordance with Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

During the month of Muharram, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar, is regarded as one of the four sacred Islamic months. During this month, the faithfuls commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), along with his family members.
