KARACHI: Taking a major step to curb environmental pollution, the Sindh government has decided to impose a complete ban on all types of plastic shopping bags across the province from June 15.

A notification has also been issued by the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development in this regard.

According to the notification, the ban will also apply to non-degradable, oxo-degradable, black and recycled plastic bags. This is the first time that a complete ban is being imposed on plastic bags after a partial ban in 2019.

This step has been taken under the amendment to the Sindh Prohibition of Non-Degradable Plastic Products Rules 2014.

Secretary of Environment Agha Shahnawaz has clarified that only eco-friendly bags will be allowed to be used, and full implementation of this policy will be ensured.

He said that plastic bags are the basis of environmental destruction, now it is not just a declaration but strict action will be taken under zero tolerance.

The Department of Environment has appealed to the public for cooperation on this decision, declaring environmental protection a national responsibility.
