KARACHI: The provincial government of Sindh has announced the launch of a housing project to provide 2.1 million free houses to the victims of the 2022 floods, along with an initiative to distribute pink EV scooters to women every year.
Sindh Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the upcoming initiative during a press conference and stressed the Sindh government’s commitment to empowering women and eco-friendly transportation.
After the horrific floods that destroyed nearly 2.1 million houses three years ago, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has vowed to rebuild and provide free houses to all affected families.
According to Sharjeel Memon, this is the biggest development in history and the possession of these houses will be registered in the names of women to further empower them.
Sharjeel Memon also said that the Sindh government will also distribute pink EV scooters every year to encourage women and increase their agility and independence.
So far, 8,000 applications have been received from women for the scheme, and the government has started purchasing EV bikes, ensuring that only licensed women will be eligible to get them.
To support this initiative, training centers will be set up in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Benazirabad and Mirpurkhas where mothers, sisters and daughters will be able to get free training on riding and maintaining their scooters.
According to recent reports, the Sindh government will distribute 1,000 electric scooters through a lottery in the first phase next month.
The aim of the program is to provide safe, affordable and green transportation to women. It will also create jobs with the electric taxi project, which is scheduled to start in June 2025.
