ISLAMABAD: The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has scheduled for hearing the petition seeking formation of a judicial commission to investigate allegations of rigging in the February 8 general elections.

The Constitution Bench headed by Justice Aminuddin will hear the petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founders Imran and Sher Afzal Marwat on February 28.

In his petition, imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the alleged rigging in the 2024 elections.

The petition requested the Supreme Court to form a commission comprising Supreme Court judges and suspend the federal and Punjab governments until the report of the judicial commission comes.

Meanwhile, the Constitution Bench will also hear the petition filed by Imran Khan seeking an investigation into the May 9 incident. Moreover, the PTI founder has also requested that the Supreme Court declare the trial of the Civil Military Court null and void.

May 9th Violence

Violent clashes broke out across Pakistan following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.

Protests were held in remote and major cities as party workers were outraged by the arrest of their chairman, with Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad calling in the armed forces to ensure law and order.

During the protests by PTI workers, military installations, including the house of a corps commander, were attacked in Lahore.

It should be noted that the PTI founder has been named as the main accused in all the cases related to the May 9th riots.

85 people, including Imran Khan’s nephew Hassan Niazi, have been convicted, while 19 of them were later pardoned by military courts.
