LAHORE: The Punjab government has proposed an unconventional solution to combat smog by imposing a three-month ban on weddings.

The Advocate General of Punjab has proposed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) limiting weddings to October and banning them from November to January to reduce pollution during winter months.

This bold move aims to alleviate the hazardous smog situation, particularly in Lahore, which has topped the global list of most polluted cities.

The toxic air has sparked health concerns for millions of residents, especially young children.  The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warns that prolonged exposure to such polluted air puts over 11 million children under five at risk.

The government has implemented various measures to address this, including School Closures, a work-from-home policy, a heavy vehicle ban, the formation of a task Force, and the elimination smoke smoke-emitting vehicles.

The Advocate General of Punjab revealed that every department has been assigned tasks to mitigate smog, including forming a task force in all districts and locking down 100 smoke-emitting buses since November 9.

Smog in Punjab is not new, but this season’s severity has prompted officials to seek more drastic solutions. Crop burning, vehicle emissions, and coal-powered plants contribute to the air pollution.

As smog blankets cities like Lahore and Multan, the government is under pressure to improve air quality and protect citizens’ health.

Experts suggest a holistic approach, combining effective legislation and stringent implementation protocols. This includes phasing out old, polluting vehicles and promoting public transport, Integrating environmental factors into urban planning, with green and sustainable urbanization plans, Encouraging electric vehicles, and establishing ubiquitous recharging stations.

By addressing the root causes and implementing robust solutions, Punjab can mitigate its smog crisis and ensure a healthier environment for its citizens.
