ISLAMABAD: Healthcare experts in the twin cities have issued a warning about the escalating smog levels, emphasizing the need for protective measures to prevent harmful health effects.

Renowned respiratory infection specialist, Dr. Azam Mushtaq, alerted the public to the deteriorating air quality, urging citizens to take immediate action to safeguard their health.

He highlighted that poor air quality poses significant risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, elderly individuals, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Dr. Mushtaq explained that inhaling smog-filled air can lead to severe respiratory complications, including asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

To mitigate these risks, he issued a smog safety advisory, recommending simple yet effective precautions. Citizens are advised to wear face masks during outdoor activities, wash their mouths regularly, and avoid unnecessary outdoor excursions, especially during peak pollution hours (10 am-4 pm).

Additionally, Dr. Mushtaq suggested checking smog timings before venturing out, staying indoors with windows and doors closed, using air purifiers, reducing physical activity, staying hydrated, and monitoring air quality indexes.

Vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and those with pre-existing conditions, should exercise extra caution.

If symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, irritation, headaches, or fatigue persist, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial.

By taking proactive measures, citizens can protect themselves and their loved ones from the hazardous effects of smog. Dr. Mushtaq’s advisory serves as a timely reminder to prioritize health and take necessary precautions to breathe easier during this critical period.
