ISLAMABAD: Two new cases of polio have been reported from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 48 for the year 2024.

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health Islamabad confirmed two new cases of Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) on November 8, Friday.

According to the details, a male child from the Ghotki district was affected by the polio virus, marking the first from the district and the 47th case of 2024 in Pakistan.

The second case, confirmed on November 8, was reported from Dera Ismail Khan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This case is the third polio effectee from the district this year, totaling 48 cases this year.

Earlier this week, a case was reported from Balochistan’s Killa Saifullah District in a month-old male child, marking this year’s 23rd case in Balochistan.

The Focal Person to the Prime Minister on Polio Eradication, Ayesha Raza, blamed the recent uptick in cases on low vaccine uptake. She said about 1 million children missed their polio vaccinations in September, compounding a pre-existing immunity gap that has been growing since COVID-19 disrupted immunization efforts.
