ISLAMABAD: Citizens in Pakistan will observe two public holidays to mark Ashura this year, which is observed on Muharram 9 and 10.

The federal government has already announced these two holidays in the annual calendar for the year 2024. The dates of the holidays will be announced after the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s decision regarding the Muharram Moon sighting.

The first month of the Islamic year was celebrated with devotion, especially among Shiite Muslims. This day commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet (PBUH).

When Will Ashura 2024 be observed in Pakistan?

The date of Ashura this year will fall on July 15 and 16 (Monday and Tuesday) if the moon is sighted on July 6. The first Muharram will then be observed on July 7.

If the new Islamic year starts on July 8, the Ashura will be observed on July 16 and 17 (Tuesday and Wednesday).

During Muharram, and especially at Ashura, people mark processions by flagging themselves with chains or knives in a formal display of mourning. The atmosphere is mournful, and many people wear black as a sign of mourning.

In congregations, scholars and remembrancers remember the incident of Karbala and the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). These gatherings aim to inspire reflection, piety, and a sense of community among participants. The Islamic month is also a time for acts of charity and compassion, as the faithful show support and kindness to those in need.
