Violent protests against inflation in Iran
TEHRAN: Protests that began in Iran against rising inflation and the continuous devaluation of the national currency have spread to various cities of the country.
According to Iranian and international media, six people, including a security officer, have been killed in violent incidents during the recent protests, while several others have been injured.
According to media reports, violent clashes took place between protesters and security forces in various areas of Iran’s Lorestan province, as well as in the cities of Fasa and Azna. In some cities, angry protesters stormed government buildings and even tried to set fire to police stations.
To control the situation, the police fired in the air, used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters.
According to Iranian media, a total of six people, including a security officer, were killed as a result of the clashes between protesters and security forces, while several others were injured.
Authorities say that several people involved in rioting and vandalism have been arrested.
According to Iranian media, protesters also stormed government buildings in several cities, while 30 people involved in rioting have been arrested.
According to media reports, educational institutions and government offices were also closed across the country on Wednesday.
It should be noted that the protests initially started in the capital Tehran for 5 days and have now spread to other cities in Iran.
The protesters are shouting slogans against the uncontrolled increase in inflation, economic downturn and currency devaluation, while security agencies are on alert in various areas to control the situation.
In this regard, Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga had also appealed to the public in a speech to show solidarity instead of protesting in the current situation.
He had said that the government may make new decisions within the next few hours to improve the economic situation and increase the purchasing power of citizens.
The Iranian president, hinting at a foreign hand behind the recent protests, said that “most of the enemy’s hopes at the moment are focused on bringing us down through economic pressure. No nation can be subdued with bombs, fighter jets or missiles.”
