UMERKOT: Polling for the by-election in National Assembly constituency NA-213 began this morning, with election materials supplied early to ensure a smooth process.
Polling will continue uninterrupted until 5 p.m., with 18 candidates, including notable figures from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), vying for the seat left empty by the death of PPP leader Nawab Yousaf Talpur.
Saba Talpur, widow of the late Nawab Yousaf Talpur and mother of provincial lawmaker Taimur Talpur, is up against Lal Chand Malhi, a GDA-backed candidate and former National Assembly member.
Malhi, who previously had a reserved seat in the 2018 elections, will likely give Talpur a tough battle, with the GDA’s support consolidating his position.
The by-election has received considerable attention, with analysts noting a particularly heated struggle between the PPP and Malhi’s supporters. The late Nawab Yousaf Talpur won a decisive victory in the 2018 general elections, receiving 175,162 votes. His nearest challenger, Mir Amanullah Talpur of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), received 44,061 votes.
Malhi, despite his outstanding performance, finished third with 37,958 votes. The results of this byelection will be interpreted as a referendum on the region’s political dynamics.
The seat contains 498 voting stations, 269 of which are marked as sensitive and 91 as very sensitive. This has generated concerns about potential security dangers, forcing officials to send more staff to voting places to guarantee a calm process.
Voter turnout is likely to be high, with 699,010 registered voters in the constituency. In light of the by-election, the Umerkot district has announced a holiday, allowing locals to vote without being distracted by work.
