MUMBAI: Fawad Khan starrer Pakistani blockbuster film ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt‘ is set to release in India next month, India-based weekly magazine India Today reported.
The film is most likely to hit theatres in neighboring India on September 20, delighting fans who have been eagerly waiting for the film’s release.
Earlier, Pakistan’s most successful film TLOMJ was going to be released in India in December 2022. However, after facing opposition from Hindu far-right groups and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the film’s release was canceled in India.
Following its international success, speculation is rife that a leading Indian film production house, possibly Zee Studios, is planning to release this highly anticipated film in India on September 20, 2024, India Today reported.
Directed by Bilal Lashari, a Punjab-language action drama film featuring Hamza Ali Abbasi, Mahira Khan, and Humaima Malik, was released worldwide on October 13, 2022. The film, which earned Rs400 Crore at the box office worldwide, is the remake of the Nasir Adeeb written 1979 film ‘Maula Jatt‘.
The last Pakistani film to get a theatrical release in India was Bol starring Mahira in 2011. Before that was Ramchand Pakistani starring Nandita Das and Rashid Farooqi in 2008. Khuda Kay Liye, which included Fawad in the ensemble cast alongside Naseeruddin Shah, was released in 2007.
Pakistani films, however, have been screened at festivals in India. In November this year, the Dharamshala International Film Festival screened Saim Sadiq’s Joyland, which is Pakistan’s official entry in the international film category at the 95th Academy Awards.
