ISLAMABAD: A lost album from the famed Pakistani Legendary singer Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is set to release over three decades after he originally recorded it.
According to Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, the album was forgotten in warehouse storage and was rediscovered when the label was relocating its archive in 2021. Khan first recorded Chain of Light at Real World Studios in April of 1990, and the album will release 34 years later on Sept. 20
The album, consisting of four Sufi Islamic devotional songs known as “qawwals,” was recorded at Real World Studios in April 1990. Among the tracks is one song that has never been heard before. “Chain of Light” was rediscovered in 2021 when Real World Records was relocating its archive and found the forgotten tapes in warehouse storage.
Gabriel released a statement saying, “I’ve had the honour to work with a tonne of different musicians from all over the world in my time, but perhaps the greatest singer of them all was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.” “We were extremely happy to have contributed to his exposure to a far larger worldwide audience because of the amazing things he could do and the feelings he could evoke with his voice.
It was a real delight when we found out this tape had been in our library. This album really shows him at his peak. It’s a wonderful record.”
