LAHORE: Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf is likely to be rested for the upcoming match against South Africa on February 12, as the team management is being cautious about his fitness.
Rauf had suffered discomfort in his ribs during Pakistan’s recent match against New Zealand and, although he has shown signs of improvement, he is still under medical observation.
The final decision regarding his participation in the game against South Africa will be taken after a review of the MRI reports.
During the game against New Zealand, Rauf was bowled in his seventh over until he had to leave the field due to pain; he was unable to complete his spell. In his absence, Salman Ali Agha had to start to bowl on the completion of that over.
The team management is somewhat reluctant to take any risks with his fitness given the important fixtures coming up. Considering the circumstances, it is perfectly justifiable not to risk him.
The opposing side posted a somewhat fighting total with five wickets down, as Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell completed half-inning.
Pakistan might think of keeping all their best arms open for South Africa, and only if Rauf is in a position to play would they consider it the more sensible way probably of resting him to ensure against any possibility of further aggravation.
The management is going to determine from the MRI report if he will play or not, while ruling out injury is most likely the aim of the management at that point rather than taking him along for the short-term game.
