PESHAWAR: A sessions court in Peshawar has acquitted 74 accused, including Irfan Saleem, in a case related to the violent protests of May 10, 2023.
Additional Sessions Judge Faraz Ahmed announced the verdict after hearing the case.
According to the court’s written decision, the accused were not directly nominated in the FIR and were later implicated during the investigation process. The court also noted that no identification parade of the accused had been conducted.
The judgment stated that the prosecution’s case relied solely on verbal and unproven allegations, while no eyewitness testimony was available to support the claims.
The court further observed that continuing the trial under such circumstances would amount to a waste of judicial time.
It also noted that the heirs of the deceased persons did not wish to pursue trial proceedings against the accused.
Consequently, the court acquitted all the accused under Section 265 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The case was registered at Faqirabad Police Station following violent incidents and firing on May 10, 2023, in which two people lost their lives.
