ISLAMABAD: The second phase of Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction has been completed in Islamabad, with the price of the 2600 MHz band increasing by 5 percent due to strong demand.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, the auction process involves three telecom operators competing for spectrum across six frequency bands, with a total of 597.2 MHz available.
During the first round, bids were placed for two of the six bands. PTA officials said 190 MHz spectrum was available in the 2600 MHz band, where 30 bids were received against 19 lots, along with additional bids for 11 lots, prompting a price adjustment.
Meanwhile, 280 MHz spectrum was available in the 3500 MHz band with 28 lots offered, out of which bids were placed for 20 lots. The bidding process continues in multiple rounds, each lasting around 30 minutes.
Officials said additional demand for the 2600 MHz band persisted in the second phase, with one operator bidding for two lots and extra bids received for seven lots. Bids were also submitted for two lots in the 700 MHz band.
Four of the six spectrum bands are being introduced to support the launch of 5G services in the country. Telecom operators Jazz, Zong, and Ufone have already deposited $15 million each as participation fees.
PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman said that power outages remain a challenge for internet service provision, but the introduction of 5G will help deliver faster and more advanced connectivity.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb described the auction as an important step for the country’s IT sector and economic development.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja also said the launch of 5G would mark a major technological milestone and help accelerate Pakistan’s digital transformation.
