Malta introduced a resolution at the Security Council calling for a humanitarian pause in the war to provide food and medical aid to the besieged and wounded in Gaza, as well as the immediate release of prisoners from Hamas.
Unconditional release has also been demanded.
Of the 15 members of the Security Council, 12 voted in favor of the resolution. The United States, Great Britain and Russia did not participate in the voting.
Every paragraph of the approved draft resolution mentions the civilians of Gaza, especially children, and calls on all sides not to obstruct the flow of aid to the besieged citizens of Gaza.
The resolution also demands that efforts to search and rescue people buried under the rubble of the destroyed buildings be launched immediately.
In the resolution, the council also rejected the forced displacement of Palestinians.
Before the vote, Russia’s representative, Vasily Nebenzya, proposed an amendment to the resolution calling for an “immediate, lasting and humanitarian ceasefire resulting in the cessation of hostilities.”
The proposal of the Russian representative was rejected by the Security Council.
Only five members, including the United Arab Emirates, voted in favor of the amendment.
The United States voted against it, while nine members abstained from voting on the proposed amendment.
Both the US and Russia have accused each other of stalling efforts to reach a consensus on action over the Gaza conflict.
