PESHAWAR: Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have issued an alert ahead of the expected heatwave in most districts of the province in the coming days.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) announced on Saturday that daytime temperatures are likely to continue to rise from Monday. Forecasts suggest a rise of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, while dry and dusty winds may affect various areas in the afternoon and evening hours.
The Meteorological Department has warned that the persistent hot and dry conditions could increase the risk of heatstroke and worsen the water supply situation in many areas.
As a precaution, the PDMA has directed all district administrations and relevant agencies to implement protective measures. People have been advised to stay out of the sun between 10 am and 5 pm, especially senior citizens and children who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
To help mitigate the impact, the health department has been asked to ensure the availability of heatstroke treatment centres, and emergency medical personnel and rescue units have been put on alert. Farmers are also urged to conserve ample water for their crops.
The advisory includes guidance on caring for livestock and pets during the hot weather, while motorists are advised to check the coolant level and tyre pressure of their vehicles before travelling.
The PDMA confirmed that its Emergency Operations Centre is operational and citizens can report heat-related emergencies by calling 1700.
