CARACAS, VENEZUELA — A devastating Venezuela earthquake occurred on Wednesday evening when two powerful tremors rocked the country within minutes, causing panic, damaging buildings in the capital, and prompting tsunami alerts in parts of the Caribbean.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first tremor struck at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time with a magnitude of 7.2. The epicenter was located just west of Morón, a coastal community along Venezuela’s Caribbean shoreline, approximately 104 miles (167 kilometers) west of Caracas. The quake occurred at a depth of around 13 miles (21 kilometers).

Just 39 seconds later, a second, stronger earthquake measuring 7.5 magnitude struck the same region. The USGS reported that the second quake’s epicenter was located slightly southwest of the first, at a shallower depth of roughly 6 miles (10 kilometers).

Panic Grips the Capital as the Venezuela Earthquake Strikes

The powerful tremors sent thousands of residents fleeing homes, offices, and commercial buildings. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as high-rise buildings swayed violently and sections of walls collapsed in several neighborhoods.

Dust clouds were seen rising above parts of the city as debris fell from damaged structures. Fearing aftershocks, many residents remained outdoors for hours, following safety protocols similar to those advised during recent natural disasters in South America. “It started gently and then became stronger and stronger,” one resident told local media. “In the end, everyone had to leave their homes and gather outside.”

Buildings Damaged and Emergency Responses Activated

Authorities reported significant structural damage in several areas of the capital, including the heavily populated Altamira and Los Palos Grandes districts. At least one high-rise building is reported to have collapsed.

Emergency crews, firefighters, and rescue teams were immediately deployed to assess the damage and assist trapped residents. Officials urged drivers to clear the roads for ambulances as rescue operations continued into the night.

Emergency Response Overview Details
Most Affected Areas Caracas (Altamira, Los Palos Grandes), La Guaira, Yaracuy
Infrastructure Impact Simón Bolívar International Airport heavily damaged, flights canceled
Current Priority Search and rescue, clearing debris, treating the injured

Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed the tremors were felt across multiple states and warned residents to remain cautious.

“We understand that people are worried, but emergency protocols have been activated to assist those affected,” Cabello stated during a televised address. “Citizens should remain alert and check on children, elderly family members, and neighbors.”

Tsunami Alerts and Seismic History

Following the shallow tremors, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a preliminary tsunami alert for the Virgin Islands. Authorities in the Dominican Republic also issued precautionary warnings, while an alert initially issued for Puerto Rico was later canceled. Experts monitored coastal areas closely due to the shallow depth of the second quake, which can increase the risk of sea-level disturbances.

Seismologists say this twin Venezuela earthquake event is among the most powerful to strike the region in more than 100 years. While Venezuela lies near several fault systems, major seismic events of this magnitude are relatively uncommon compared to Pacific Ring of Fire nations like Mexico and Chile.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage, and rescue and recovery efforts remain ongoing.
After Venezuela, many other countries were also shaken by earthquakes
