VIRUDHUNAGAR: A horrific explosion at a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has killed 23 workers and injured several others.

According to Indian media, the explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon at a factory in Kattanarapatti village when workers were handling chemicals used in firecrackers.

Officials say the explosion was likely caused by friction in the chemicals, which caused several sheds in the factory to collapse. The intensity of the explosion increased due to the nearby chemical storeroom.

Rescue teams reached the spot and started rescue operations to put out the fire and extract people buried under the rubble. The injured were immediately shifted to the hospital, many of whom are in critical condition due to burns.

According to the district administration, the factory had a license, but operating the factory on Sunday was a violation of the rules. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and announced the cancellation of the factory’s license.

According to the police, special teams have been formed to search for the factory owner and other responsible persons.
