SULAWESI: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck central Indonesia’s Sulawesi province on Sunday, injuring at least 29 people, two of whom were in critical condition, the country’s disaster management agency (BNPB) said.
The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) and shook Poso Regency.
The tremors were also felt in nearby areas. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties.
BNPB said in a statement that rescue teams were in the affected areas and the situation was being monitored.
Indonesia is located in an earthquake-prone region known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire.”
It is one of the areas on Earth where different tectonic plates meet, which results in frequent earthquakes.
