NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a hefty fine of ₹9 million on Air India, following a serious violation of operating a flight with untrained crew members.
According to the reports, the DGCA found that Air India was caught in a critical scheduling problem that could have dire consequences. The airline operated the flight with a line captain who lacked the necessary training and a first officer who was not cleared for line operations.
The incident came to light after the DGCA reviewed the voluntary report submitted by Air India on July 10. The review, which included an inspection of the airline’s scheduling practices, revealed numerous regulatory violations and deficiencies.
Subsequently, on July 22, the DGCA issued a show-cause notice to Air India, seeking an explanation for the error. The airline’s response was deemed insufficient, leading to a fine.
Apart from the company-wide fine of ₹9 million, Air India’s director of operations and director of training have been slapped with individual fines of ₹600,000 and ₹300,000 respectively.
