Canada introduces faster immigration pathway for foreign doctors, including Pakistanis

OTTAWA: Canada has announced new immigration measures aimed at attracting foreign medical specialists, including doctors from Pakistan, by introducing faster pathways to permanent residence and expedited work permit processing to help address the country’s healthcare workforce shortage.

Under the new policy, eligible doctors can apply for permanent residence through five immigration pathways, including the Express Entry system and various provincial and territorial nominee programs. The measures are designed to simplify the immigration process and encourage more qualified physicians to settle in Canada.

A key feature of the initiative is 14-day processing for work permit applications for eligible doctors who have been nominated by a Canadian province or territory. The expedited processing allows physicians to begin working in Canada while their permanent residence applications are being processed. It does not mean permanent residence itself is granted within 14 days.

The Canadian government has also confirmed that applicants may include their spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in their permanent residence applications, making it easier for families to relocate together.

Interested Pakistani doctors are advised to review the eligibility criteria, including credential recognition and licensing requirements, before applying through Canada’s official immigration channels.
